Minder goed nieuws voor de legalisering van marihuana op federaal niveau in de Verenigde Staten van Amerika. De nieuwe procureur generaal die Jeff Sessions vervangt, William Barr, heeft laten weten dat hij niet van zin is om marihuana legaal te maken. Hij is voorstander om de drug op nationaal niveau te blijven verbieden, dus ook voor medicinaal gebruik.
De uitspraak van procureur generaal William Barr in de senaat kan mogelijk voor een blokkade zorgen voor marihuana in de Verenigde Staten. Barr zei namelijk dat hij voorstander is om het beleid van Jeff Sessions voort te zetten, dat betekent dat marihuana illegaal blijft op federaal niveau.
Geen verandering
Zijn statement komt er nadat er een duidelijke trend is waarin de Amerikaanse staten meer en meer geneigd zijn om onafhankelijk te beslissen dat medicinale en recreatieve marihuana wel legaal is. Dat vormt uiteraard een probleem omdat dit voor heel wat twijfel en onzekerheid zorgt in de USA.
Personally, I would still favor one uniform federal rule against marijuana.
William Barr is dus niet bepaald een voorstander om marihuana te legaliseren en hij zou de onzekerheid en de twijfel de wereld willen uitwerken door de federale aanpak inzake drug door te drukken richting de verschillende staten. Dat zou uiteraard een probleem vormen omdat dit kan leiden tot het afbrokkelen van de marihuana industrie in de Verenigde Staten van Amerika.
Het gedoe rond de legalisering van marihuana zou voor een probleem kunnen zorgen tijdens de presidentsverkiezingen volgend jaar. Verschillende Democraten en Republikeinen hebben reeds hun steun uitgedrukt voor de legalisering van marihuana op federaal niveau. Als de Verenigde Staten een marihuana vriendelijke president krijgt, kan dit voor frictie zorgen met William Barr.
