De olieprijzen maken zich op voor een groot verlies deze week door de onzekerheden en zorgen omtrent de lage vraag naar de grondstof. Die vloeien voort uit de situatie omtrent COVID-19 in China. Hoewel de overheid de maatregelen gaat versoepelen, lijkt de situatie volledig uit de hand te lopen.
De oliemarkt staat onder druk, de prijs voor een vat WTI crude is sinds 3 januari aan het dalen, van 80 dollar naar 73 dollar. Dat heeft te maken met enkele factoren die doorwegen op de prijzen. Enerzijds had Saoedi-Arabië de olieprijzen voor Azië en Europa reeds verlaagd in februari, hierdoor werd duidelijk dat ze zich zorgen maken over de vooruitzichten op de oliemarkt.
Anderzijds zijn er opnieuw problemen omtrent COVID-19 in China. Hoewel de overheid de coronamaatregelen heeft versoepeld, is de situatie er allesbehalve onder controle. Het aantal besmettingen loopt fors op, alsook het aantal doden. Hoewel de officiële cijfers doen uitschijnen dat er niets aan de hand is, liggen de ziekenhuizen bomvol met coronapatiënten. Zelfs begrafenisondernemers kunnen het tempo niet aan.
Zwakke start
De zwakke start van olie dit jaar wordt ook veroorzaakt door een mogelijk overaanbod op de markt en door een waarschuwing van het Internationale Monetaire Fonds dat één derde van de wereldeconomie in een recessie kan belanden door de wereldwijde economische vertragingen.

Volgens Stephen Brennock, analist bij PVM, is er weinig opwaarts potentieel voor olie gezien de troebele vooruitzichten. De WTI crude gaat mogelijks beïnvloed worden door het Amerikaanse jobrapport dat deze week wordt gepubliceerd. Als blijkt dat de Amerikaanse economie robuust is, zou WTI een duwtje in de rug kunnen krijgen op korte termijn.
